STORYVILLE COFFEE TO DEDICATE 100% OF MAY REVENUE TO IJM

Gourmet Roaster Will Donate up to $1 Million in “Give it All Away in May” Campaign – Learn How You Can Get Involved

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON – In the face of a difficult economic climate, Storyville Coffee Company has made a radical business decision: Instead of scaling back, they will “Give it All Away in May.”

Throughout May, the high-end home-delivery coffee company will donate 100% of revenue, up to $1 million, to International Justice Mission, supporting work around the world to rescue victims of slavery, trafficking and other forms of violent oppression.

“Despite all financial indicators and business advice to the contrary, we’ve decided that this is not at time for our business to sit on the sidelines,” explains Storyville co-president Ryan Gamble. “Whatever we can do to fight modern-day slavery, we’ll do it.”

Throughout May, the coffee company will donate 100% of revenue, up to $1 million, to International Justice Mission.
If you are interested in supporting the work of IJM through purchasing Storyville’s gourmet coffee beans for yourself or as a gift, please visit their site at www.storyville.com. Every dollar you spend will be donated to International Justice Mission’s work.

During the “Give It All Away in May” campaign, Storyville will also host a tour of musicians performing 20 concerts in people’s homes across the country. Attendees can learn about the work of IJM, listen to great music, and purchase coffee that will make a difference in the fight against injustice. Visit www.storyville.com/coffeehouselive and sign up to stay informed about Coffeehouse Live event dates and locations.

Storyville Coffee is based on the idea that coffee is a ritual that gives us time to think, create and dream – about what do we want to do with our lives to change the world. In dreaming, we remember those who cannot. Your support can enable victims of modern-day slavery to dream again and to begin new lives through the work of IJM.

For more information, to attend a concert, or to support the “Give it all Away in May” campaign by making a purchase, go to www.storyville.com. Consider a gift of these gourmet coffee beans for Mother’s Day or graduations this month – the cost will go directly to supporting IJM’s critical work.

IJM/Storyville Twitter Giveaway

Do you Twitter? Help IJM spread the word about this incredible opportunity to support our casework and drink great coffee. Each week beginning May 4th, during the “Give it All Away in May” campaign, we will be giving a Storyville Mug & Just Courage gift bundle to one @IJMHQ or @StoryvilleBuzz follower on Twitter.

Acting on AIDS cell phone drive

[from Sean]

Acting on AIDS is organizing a cell phone drive throughout campus!

It’s called Recycle a Phone, Build a School.

We’ve partnered with Charity Cellular, and are collecting used phones, iPods,
and mp3 players (in any condition). The phones will be memory wiped, sent
overseas, refurbished, and put back onto the market. The refurbisher pays us.
And we give the money to World Vision, to build a school for kids who might not
otherwise have one.

Essentially:
1. you get rid of your junk phone
2. the earth benefits from not having another phone in a landfill
3. used phones become available for lower prices for those in need
4. underprivileged children get a school/education

Collection Box Locations:
-All dorms
-Health Sciences Library
-Odegaard Library
-Foster Library
-HUB info desk
-More Hall Office

Quest Church Event: Call + Response Screening

Quest Church Event: “Why the Homeless?”

In 2008, the Homeless One Night Count conducted their survey in King County in which 8,439 people were accounted for as homeless.  This year’s count reflected a 2% increase of homeless people in unsheltered areas going from 2,631 individuals to 2,685 (without adding any new areas). As we look at this increase, as well as take into account the economic climate we are currently facing we cannot ignore the impact of the lack of affordable housing and dwindling economy on the most vulnerable of our city.  At Quest we have decided that this is a significant issue to gather and dialogue about.  How can we be part of the solution?  Why should we even care?

On March 16th, at 7 pm Quest Church will be hosting a panel discussion with community advocates from the greater Seattle area to engage on these important questions and challenge us to join in the solution to compassionately care for our brothers and sisters who are non-housed in our neighborhoods.

The Panelists include:

Tim Harris (director of Real Change)

Craig Rennebohm (chaplain to the homeless and author of Souls in the Hands of a Tender God)

Rev. Rick Reynolds (director of Operation Nightwatch)

Dustin Cross(Pastor at Nickelsville)

Bill Kirlin-Hacket (director of InterfaithTask Force on Homelessness) and

Rev. Monica Corsaro (director ofSocial Justice Ministries at the Church Council of Greater Seattle)

Please spread the word—invite your friends, family, co-workers and associates to this important event.  We look forward to deeper conversation and the opportunity to learn from each other.

This is a FREE event but space is limited so please RSVP here.  We hope to see you there!

In Him,

Pastor DeAnza

Come show your support for cinema with a social conscience!

http://artslink.wordpress.com/2009/01/23/seattle-human-rights-film-festival/

Amnesty International proudly presents the 17th Annual Seattle Human Rights Film Festival.  The Seattle Human Rights Film Festival (SHRFF) celebrates the invaluable contribution filmmakers offer to raising public awareness and understanding of often overlooked human rights issues. Since 1992, SHRFF has brought some of the world’s most thought-provoking films to our community, covering critical issues that face us as global citizens. Through scenes of despair, death and destruction, themes of survival, compassion and hope emerge.

SHRFF films cover a wide range of important human rights topics from across the globe, each with their own unique, compelling stories to tell. Our film selection and festival goals remain consistent with Amnesty International’s mission to “investigate and expose abuses, educate and mobilize the public, and help transform societies to create a safer, more just world.”

2009 promises to be our most successful year yet! SHRFF ‘09 will kick off with an Opening Night premiere at Cinerama in downtown Seattle, followed by back-to-back screenings at the Northwest Film Forum in Capitol Hill. Closing Night festivities will be held at the SIFF Cinema in the Seattle Center. We are also pleased to announce a pre-opening night Global Health Symposium, in partnership with the UW Global Health Resource Center.

Featuring a variety of special engagements at premiere Seattle venues, an exceptionally impressive selection of 16 cutting-edge documentaries, and a wealth of guest speakers that will include award-winning filmmakers, producers, activists, and UW professors, SHRFF ‘09 is an event not to be missed.

A carol from Sojourners

Have Yourself a Peace and Justice Christmas

Have yourself a peace and justice Christmas,
Set your heart a-right.
Flee the malls and focus on Christ’s guiding light.

Have yourself a peace and justice Christmas,
Give your time a way.
Share God’s love, And serve “the least of these” today.

Here we are, as we pray for peace,
We’ll live simply and give more.
We care for those far and near to us,
Which brings cheer to us, once more.

God brings down
The haughty from high places,
And lifts up the low.
God cares for the hungry and the humble, so –
Forget the stress and let the peace and justice flow!
